Getting Around

Hooton Rail Station is conveniently within walking distance of the Woodcote Hotel.  Here, you can hop the train for a short 15-minute ride to the City of Chester, or ride to Port Sunlight or on to Liverpool stations.  www.merseytravel.gov.uk

The amazing sculptures of Antony Gormley called Another Place can be seen at Crosby Beach.  With 100 cast-iron, life-size figures made in his image are spread out along three kilometers of the foreshore and stretching over one kilometer out to sea.

Chester – a 15-minute train ride from Hooton Station will take you to Chester.  The shops at Chester consist of four main streets that are always busy and have been since the middle ages of this Roman City.  The streets offer a main shopping areas with store level shopfronts and as series of elevated covered walkways known as the ‘The Rows.’  Here you can find tea rooms, bookstores and galleries.

New Brighton:

On the north-eastern tip of the Wirral Peninsula where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea.  Known as a bustling seaside resort since 1826 for its pier, promenade and bathing pools, New Brighton has given many wonderful memories to all who have visited.  

It boasts a 19th century Grade II former sea defense, Fort Perch Rock and the Perch Rock Lighthouse.  In addition, today it houses a leisure and retail facility called Marine Point that includes a popular theatre, marine lake, parks, and a unique fairy village. 

Just Opened - The New Brighton Mermaid Trail, which takes its inspiration from ‘The Black Rock Mermaid’, who was said to have appeared to a local sailor in New Brighton in the 18th century, was officially unveiled on 7th June.

Albert Dock – A top British Heritage attraction located on the spectacular waterfront, Albert Dock boasts the largest collection of grade 1 buildings in Britain.   A fully functioning dock until 1972; it was restored by HRH Prince Charles in 1988 as a visitor attraction. Metropolitan Cathedral –Consecrated in 1967 by the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Heena. It is known is the Mother Church of the Catholics of Northern England. Lutyens Crypt –Named for Sir Edwin Lutyens who designed a Cathedral for Liverpool.  Although the foundation stone was laid in 1933, the project was never completed due to WWII and rising costs.  Located next to the Metropolitan Cathedral One of the largest Cathedral crypts in the world it is known to be Liverpool’s best kept architectural secret…..and ‘the greatest building never built.’  www.liverpoolmetrocathedral.org.uk

Princes Road Synagogue – a grade I listed building, consecrated in 1874 offers tours Monday-Thursday.  It is the oldest Synagogue in Liverpool with deep history of its congregation dating back 250 years.  www.princesroad.org
